Gas chromatography in studies of environmental pollution

Presenting person: Prof. Dr. Jacek Namiesnik, Dept. Analytical Chemistry, TU Gdansk
Th. 2001-11-15 (16:15), H6

Increasingly common opinions are that some environment related disciplines are based on environmental analytics and monitoring. A special attention should be paid to chromatography mainly gas chromatography mainly gas chromatography which very often is indispensable in analysis of some complex environmental samples. However, many analytical tasks cannot be solved by direct use of GC due to:
- incompatibility of sample aggregation state;
- too low concentration of analytes;
- in sufficient volatility of analytes;
- too high abundance of interferences;
- present in water;
- chemical similarity of analytes;
- too large differences in concentration of analytes from the same chemical class.
Gas chromatography application in the above mentioned situations is possible only when the proper sample preparation is applied. This thesis will be proved by presenting some original work done in the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Chemical Faculty of the TUG.The examples are as follows:
- physical speciation of PAH\'s and PCB\'s in aquatic environment;
- determination of volatile chloroorganic compounds in human urine;
- new devices for determination of metaloorganic pollutants;
- application of thermal desorbers coupled to GC;
- application of denuders and passive dosimeters in studies of indoor air and workplace atmosphere
