The International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI) supports and brings together scientists interested in the biology of social insects and how insect societies work. From 27th to 28th March 2015 the Central European section held a two-day meeting at the Franken Akademie in Lichtenfels discussing the latest results on the ecology and evolution of social insects. In total 38 talks and 21 posters were presented spanning areas such as nutritional ecology, host-parasite interaction and immunity, division of labour, ageing and reproduction. The meeting was organised by the Population Animal Ecology group led by Prof. Heike Feldhaar of the University of Bayreuth.

The keynote speakers were Audrey Dussoutour from the University of Toulouse and Christoph Grüter from the University of Lausanne. The Kutter Student Prize 2015 for the best talk was awarded to Lena Waidele, University of Freiburg with the contribution "A test of substrate adaptation via symbiosis in termites", 2nd best talk was given by Kathrin Krausa, Ruhr University of Bochum and the 3rd best talk by Pina Brinker from University of Bayreuth. The Kutter Student Prize 2015 for the best poster went to Verena Bohrer, University of Bayreuth with the contribution "Comparative assessment of the strength of the antimicrobial secretions of different Hymenoptera species", 2nd best poster was presented by Julia Giehr, University of Regensburg and 3rd best poster by Benedikt Hammel, University of Tübingen.
