The potential contribution that remote sensing earth observation data can make to biodiversity conservation has been recognised, but it is not yet utilised to its full potential. Here, I present a summary of what the conservation community actually wants to do with remote sensing, including examples of how conservationists have used remote sensing to meet these needs (predominantly drawn from my own work with BirdLife and RSPB). I conclude by considering the next steps we need to take to improve the use of remote sensing in conservation.
